Helping your child with science

Our Principles

As Westerings, we believe that Science is good when…

· We all have a positive, excited attitude towards Science.

· Children are asking and being asked questions, and are finding answers to these questions through investigation and exploration.

· Children are challenged to try new things, to think differently and to be able to confidently talk about and share their learning.

· Children are encouraged to think about the impact that Science has within the wider world and their lives.

· We have the resources we need to make science fun, practical and exciting.

· Everyone has an opportunity to succeed and show their Scientific understanding in different ways

· Children adopt a growth mindset and can persevere and reflect on their learning, as well as celebrating their successes.

Take a look at some of the fantastic Teaching and Learning of Science at Westerings this autumn Term:

Year 4 learning about Sound, by creating and testing string telephones!

Science Club:

Today, the children learnt about viruses. They discussed how they occur, how they affect the body and how they are removed from the body. Then the children created slime, to represent a virus and removed it from their 'bodies'!

15th October

During Westerings Careers Month, Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity of participating a live video conference with a commander of the National Space Centre UK! The children spent time beforehand thinking of some questions to ask, before asking them over a live feed!

11th October

As part of our Westerings Careers Month, Year 5 and 6 were visited by STEM Ambassador Jeff Welsh. Mr Welsh currently works as a mechanical engineer on the Ford Transit program, at the Ford Research and Engineering Centre, Dunton. His focus at the moment is on developing electric vehicles and in his past work he ran testing on the UK 2012 Olympic torch development! Children had an opportunity to hear about his exciting career path and to learn how education played a part in this.

9th October

Today, KS1 and KS2 had a visit from Fizz Pop Science! Atomic Anthony completed lots of experiments with the children during assembly time, about friction. Science club will commence after the half term holiday, led by Atomic Anthony himself! Please complete a sign up form if you wish to attend- places are limited!

25th September

6 pupils from year 3 and 4 were chosen to take part in a Science Challenge Day experience at Greensward Academy. The children arrived to find out that their treats for attending had been stolen and that the suspects were the members of staff! Children had to complete a series of practical tasks using secondary science equipment, in order to solve the crime and find the culprit! They completed flame tests, using the Bunsen burners, as well as chromatography and finger printing. Finally they signed their work, using acids and alkali!
